A pair of sealskin slippers that Rita made for herself. She wears them every day in the house. She learned how to make boots and slippers from her mother. Each of her sisters can make them too. Rita has two daughters, both in their 60s, neither of whom can make sealskin products. The skill isn’t being passed through the generations like it used to. Having said that, Rita has taught some classes to residents of The Straights, and she believes a few of her pupils are still making them.

She explained that the most difficult part is the pleating, and this is what she concentrated on when teaching others. The pleats take patience, skill and know-how. They are also what makes them seal skin boots/slippers. She said that without the pleats, they don’t look very nice. I didn’t ask her if she ever made ornaments… I will try to remember to ask her next time.
